Info from Licensor: "Sammy has a bit of a story... He is a California Desert tortoise. They are an endangered species, so he's licensed by Fish and Wildlife. He actually wears a license plate. He came from our local university, CSUB. They had a habitat for the students. I adopted him from the California Turtle and Tortoise Club (CTTC) in 2010.

They said he lived there since the late 1970s and was brought at breeding age... so he was at least 20 years old when they got him. He has some shell damage... it looks like he had been chewed on a bit... I imagine that's why they had him."
