#11 Sauptika Parvan: The Nocturnal Massacre

With the fall of Duryodhana the Mahabharata war is as good as over. Only
three heroes worth the name on the Kaurava side survived, Kripa, Ashvatthaman, and Kritavarman. The surviving heroes and ordinary soldiers on the side of the Pandavas were sleeping in their camp happily and trustfully. Duryodhana, though crest-fallen, was still alive. He anoints Ashvatthaman as his next general. That night, Ashvatthaman beholds thousands of crows are sleeping happily on a banyan tree and a terrible owl silently approaches the
branches of tree and kills many crows. Ashvatthaman decides to attack the Pandava camp at night. What happened next was a horrifying nocturnal massacre carried out by him.

Aswatthaman slays all, Dhrishtadyumna, five sons of Draupadi and the Yadava warriors. Hearing the news from Asvatthāman, Duryodhana dies with satisfaction.
