Hebrew Alphabet Song (Classical / Biblical Pronunciation) Sung to Hatikvah (Israeli National Anthem)
The Hebrew alphabet (הָאָלֶף-בֵּית), with classical / Biblical pronunciation, sung to the tune of Hatikvah (הַתִּקְוָה "The Hope"), the national anthem of the state of Israel. Sing the Hebrew alphabet to the Israeli national anthem!
Slides present each Hebrew letter with both the name of the letter in Hebrew characters and also transliteration. The alphabet is sung 12 times-once for each tribe of Israel-to assist students in its memorization.
Note that the pronunciation of the Hebrew characters matches the sounds employed in ancient Hebrew, not modern Hebrew (e. g., "waw" instead of "vav," cf. Psalm 118:41 LXX {Psalm 119:141, Hebrew], ουαυ for ו). Also, for pedagogical purposes, sin (שׂ) and shin (שׁ) and are considered two letters, not one, although they really constitute one consonant (see. e. g. Psalm 119:161-168)
The Hebrew consonants are:
א ʾā́lep̱ אָלֶף
בּ bêṯ בֵּית
גּ gı̂́mel גִּימֶל
דּ dā́leṯ דָּלֶת
ה hēʾ הֵא
ו wāw וָו
ז záyin זַיִן
ח ḥêṯ חֵית
ט ṭêṯ טֵית
י yôḏ יוֹד
(ך) כּ kap̱ כַּף
ל lā́meḏ לָמֶד
מ (ם) mēm מֵם
(ן) נ nûn נוּן
ס sā́meḵ סָמֶךְ
ע ꜥáyin עַיִן
(ף) פּ pēh פֵּה
(ץ) צ ṣā́ḏê צָדֵי
ק qôp̱ קוֹף
ר rês̆ רֵישׁ
שׂ śı̂n שִׂין
שׁ s̆ı̂n שִׁין
תּ tāw תָּו
The words of Hatikvah are:
The words of Israel's national anthem transliterated (in modern Hebrew pronunciation):
Kol od balevav penimah,
Nefesh yehudi homiyah,
Ulefa-atei mizrach, kadimah,
Ayin letziyon tsofiyah.
Od lo avdah tikvateinu
Hatikva bat shnot alpayim,
Lihyot am chofshi be-artzeinu,
Eretz tzion, virushalayim.
An English translation of Hatikvah:
As long as in the heart within,
The Jewish soul yearns,
And toward the eastern edges, onward,
An eye gazes toward Zion.
Our hope is not yet lost,
The hope that is two-thousand years old,
To be a free nation in our land,
The Land of Zion, Jerusalem.
The Jewish national anthem's words were adopted from a poem by Naftali Herz Imber.
