Westlake, OH - A wanted fugitive decided to run from police on a heavily traveled road, and it ended in a high-speed collision with an innocent driver.

On Thursday, at 6:30 p.m., Westlake police were alerted by police in neighboring Bay Village that they had just called off pursuit of a car because of the dangerous actions of the driver.

A Westlake officer then spotted the Buick sedan recklessly driving through the parking lot of a car wash on Detroit Road near Dover Center and attempted to stop the driver, who was wanted on felony warrants.

“Yes, we see him, eastbound on Detroit. Speeds are 40, one male operator,” the officer told the dispatcher, as heard from audio on his dash camera.

But the driver quickly accelerated up to 75 miles per hour, and that’s when a Westlake police supervisor directed the officer to end the pursuit due to the threat to innocent drivers on the road.

Just seconds later, however, the man fleeing from police ran a red light at Detroit and Canterbury and slammed into an SUV.

Officers did not know if the suspect was armed, so they carefully approached the wrecked car, pulled him out and handcuffed him.

After paramedics arrived at the scene, the suspect and the innocent victim that he struck were taken by rescue squad to University Hospitals St. John Medical Center, where they were treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

After the fugitive, identified as 42-year-old Jason Borowski of Cleveland, was released, he was taken to the Westlake City Jail. He was booked on charges of felony fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.

Borowski was already being sought by other police departments on warrants, charging him with felony theft, possession of dangerous drugs and larceny.

Investigators said, inside his wrecked car, they found hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia.

A grand jury will now decide if Borowski will face new charges that include vehicular assault for the harm he did on Thursday night while running from police.

The innocent driver was treated for injuries and has been released from the hospital.
