Barry Goldwater: The Most Pro-Civil Rights Presidential Candidate in US History

In this video essay, I will argue that Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican nominee for President, was the most pro-civil rights candidate in United States history. Though vilified by his political opponents and accused of appealing to racism, Goldwater's positive record on civil rights is without question, and he needs to be remembered not for his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but for his tireless advocacy to end segregation throughout his political and personal life.
