From wide-open spaces to hidden mountain trails, our Idaho leg of the Trans America Trail was packed with surprises. We set up camp on a lakeshore for just $11, grilled burgers in heavy winds, and woke up to the beauty of Red Rock Lakes Wildlife Preserve along the Centennial Mountains on the Idaho–Montana border.

Our route took us through Idaho Falls traffic, past potato fields and into rugged backcountry where we spotted a bull moose right off the ridge. We also checked out the Smoky Bar emergency solar radio station before camping beside a clear creek in Chalice National Park.
