Memphis Leaders Push Back on National Guard Deployment

Memphis politicians are speaking out against the proposed deployment of the National Guard to assist with crime challenges. State Rep. Justin Pearson has called the plan a "gross abuse of power" and argues that the solution lies in addressing the root causes of crime, such as poverty, stating, "We need poverty eradication, not military occupation."
​Similarly, City Councilwoman Jerri Green plans to introduce a resolution to oppose the deployment, asserting, "The solution to crime is opportunities, not occupation." Both leaders emphasize the need for federal and state investment in community resources like mental health services and education, rather than military intervention.
