RetroInspection - The Scarlet Pimpernel - pt. 3

Though The Scarlet Pimpernel seems the titular hero, Baroness Orczy's novel found its true hero in Marguerite St. Just.
The beautiful wife of Sir Percy Blakeney, Marguerite graced the Paris stage where she caught the eye of the Englishman. He raised her station and moved her to Britain.
However, out of loyalty to her brother, she betrayed several nobles to the French Revolutionaries. This act drove a wedge between the young lovers. And so it is her quest for redemption, which becomes the rescue of brave Percy, that fuels the narrative of the novel making her the true hero of the book.
Indeed, for much of the book except the first chapter, it is through her eyes that we see the story unfold.
