NATO marks 10 years of Southeast Command in Romania amid rising threats from Russia

On Friday, troops from various countries gathered at a military base in Bucharest to mark 10 years of NATO’s Headquarters for the South-East (HQ MND-SE) presence in Romania.

According to the Associated Press, the division was created in the midst of a crisis in 2014, when Russia illegally annexed Crimea.

In 2014, a NATO summit in Wales decided on a readiness action plan that led to the establishment of the first NATO division headquarters in Romania.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began in February 2014. Crimea was annexed by Russia in March of that year.

Lieutenant General Jeremy Bennett, deputy commander of Allied Land Command, headquartered in Izmir, said the expanded exercise “will send a clear message. The southeastern flank is not fragile. It is a fortress."
