Eckhart Tolle is a German-born spiritual teacher and self-help author, widely recognized as one of the most influential spiritual figures of the 21st century. Tolle's teachings focus on the power of living in the present moment, a concept he elaborates on in his internationally bestselling books, including The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment (1997) and A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (2005).
His work draws from diverse spiritual traditions such as Zen Buddhism, Christian mysticism, Sufism, and Hinduism, though he remains unaffiliated with any formal religion. He emphasizes the importance of transcending the ego and discursive thinking to access a deeper state of consciousness and inner peace.
The "dark night of the soul" is a concept originating from the 16th-century Spanish mystic and Catholic poet St. John of the Cross, who described it as a stage of final and complete purification in the mystical journey towards union with God.
It follows a phase of illumination and is characterized by a profound sense of the withdrawal of God's presence, confusion, helplessness, and a stagnation of the will.
This period is not a punishment for sin but a necessary process of "unselfing" and surrendering to the hidden purposes of the divine will, leading to a new, transcendental level of existence.
The term is derived from John of the Cross's poem "La noche oscura del alma," which narrates the soul's journey to mystical union with God through a "dark night" symbolizing the unknowability of the divine.
The experience is often described as a crisis of faith where God seems silent and distant, even when one attempts to connect with Him, resulting in a deep sense of emptiness and spiritual dryness.
It is not caused by personal failings but is an experience initiated by God to foster greater spiritual maturity and trust.
The darkness is not literal but represents the soul's journey through a state of desolation, where the soul must rely on faith rather than feeling or emotional comfort.
This process is likened to a crucible where all human elements are melted together, ultimately leading to a state of complete, constant, and inseparable communion with the Spirit.
In modern usage, the phrase has broadened beyond its religious context to describe any extremely difficult and painful period in one's life, such as a profound existential crisis, a collapse of perceived meaning, or a deep sense of meaninglessness.
It can be triggered by significant external events like the death of a loved one, loss of a career, or other major life disruptions that invalidate previous sources of purpose.
While the experience can feel very similar to depression, with intense sadness, hopelessness, and a sense of purposelessness, it is viewed as a necessary and often transformative phase of personal development, leading to a deeper perception of life and one's place in it.
It is considered a common and necessary part of spiritual awakening or deep inner transformation, often referred to as the "underbelly of awakening"
