Officials confirm that a small number of advanced F-35 stealth fighters have arrived in Puerto Rico as part of a growing buildup of military assets in the region aimed at combating drug cartels.According to the Associated Press, two U.S. officials confirmed that a “handful” of F-35 fighter jets are currently based in the U.S. They spoke on condition of anonymity to freely discuss current operations.The confirmation came amid US plans to deploy 10 fighter jets to the region, and as online aircraft watchers spotted some fighter jets moving from US bases over the weekend using tracking websites. Videos and photos of the planes in Puerto Rico have also made their way online.

The planes join a small flotilla of Navy ships, including several ships carrying more than 2,000 Marines, as well as maritime patrol aircraft that have been in the region for several weeks.
