Antifa traces its origins to the Antifaschistische Aktion (Antifascist Action), a paramilitary group formed by the German Communist Party (KPD) in May 1932 amid the political turmoil of the Weimar Republic. This early iteration engaged in violent street battles not just against Nazis, but primarily against social democrats and liberals, whom the communists derisively labeled "social fascists." Symbolized by two red flags representing communism and socialism, the group was banned after Adolf Hitler's rise to power, but its ideology endured in East Germany, where "anti-fascism" served as a pretext for a repressive communist regime marked by Stasi surveillance and the suppression of dissent. Contemporary European antifa, particularly in Germany, perpetuates this legacy through militant direct action and territorial control, drawing further influence from historical antifascist struggles in Italy and Spain, as well as the British punk subculture and anti-racist skinhead movements of the 1970s and 1980s. In the United States, antifa emerged in the late 1980s in the Midwest, inspired by British anarchist publications and forming networks like Anti-Racist Action (ARA), which focused on violent confrontations with perceived far-right groups. Over time, it incorporated critical theory—a Marxist framework emphasizing power dynamics and identity-based oppression—along with concepts like "white privilege" and "intersectionality," blending class struggle with identity politics to gain traction in academic and cultural spheres.
