Surekha Yadav – the woman who wrote a new chapter in the history of Indian Railways! 🌄🚊

Born in Satara, Maharashtra, Surekha dreamt of becoming a teacher in her childhood. But destiny had other plans.

She joined Indian Railways in 1989 as an Assistant Driver.

By 1996, she became a Goods Train Driver, and in 2000, she took charge as a Local Motorwoman.

She confidently handled the tough Bhor Ghat section between Mumbai and Pune, a true test for any loco pilot.

In 2011, she created history by becoming the first woman to drive the legendary Deccan Queen.

Having already driven Mumbai’s iconic locals, she proved her mettle again in 2023 by taking charge of the modern Vande Bharat Express (Solapur–Mumbai) — breaking stereotypes that gender could ever be a limitation.

Working in a male-dominated field and cabins was never easy, but with the support of her family, she kept moving forward.

After 36 years of legendary service, she arrived at CSMT driving the Rajdhani Express, where she received a hero’s welcome — because this was her last journey before retirement.

Even today, Indian Railways employs over 12.5 lakh people, but only 99,809 are women, and among them, just 2,037 are loco pilots.

Her impact went beyond the railways — when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath for his third term, Surekha Yadav was a special invitee at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Her journey is a legacy of courage, resilience, and women empowerment — an inspiring story of breaking boundaries and blazing a trail for future generations.
