Human rights concerns as Rwanda hosts UCI Road World Championships

As Rwanda prepares to host the first UCI Road World Championships to be held in Africa, rights groups are raising concerns over Rwanda’s human rights record and its alleged role in the deadly conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Human Rights Watch researcher Clémentine de Montjoye said there was nothing wrong with using big sporting events as a strategy to draw tourism and investment in and of itself, but warned that in this case, it risks diverting attention from ongoing abuses.
