From Domestic Call to Deadly Shootout: IMPD Officers Fire Back at Armed Suspect
On July 24th, 2025, at 7:20 a.m., IMPD East District officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of North Ritter Avenue on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located a woman who had been shot. The victim was transported to the hospital where she later died. Detectives determined the incident stemmed from a domestic disturbance. Officers on scene relayed a description of the suspect in the vehicle he used to flee the area. Just before 8:00 a.m., IMPD North District officers located 76-year-old Walter McNary driving the vehicle described by the officer on Ritter Avenue in the 3300 block of Boulevard Place. Officers followed McNary onto West 30th Street. They activated their emergency lights. He refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. McNary turned on to West 29th Street, stopped and fired at Officer Robinson. After McNary fired, Officer Robinson discharged his service weapon from inside his patrol vehicle. Officer Robinson then continued the pursuit. At the next intersection. McNary fired at officer #1 who was driving south on East Riverside Drive. McNary drove down an alley and came to a stop at West Congress Avenue.
McNary fired at least two shots at officer #2, who was driving west on Congress Avenue. At Clifton Street and West Congress Avenue. McNary slowed and fired at officers. Officer Robinson stopped, opened his door, and fired his patrol rifle. The pursuit ended when McNary pulled onto a property and got out of his vehicle. McNary exited his vehicle and moved out of sight. Moments later, he emerged from behind a wall and pointed a firearm at Officer Robinson. Officer Robinson discharged his patrol rifle. Officer Robinson exited his vehicle and took cover near the front passenger side door. He fired one round from his patrol rifle after McNary pointed a firearm in his direction. SWAT used a bulletproof vehicle to approach McNary, who did not respond to commands while his firearm remained within reach. After a flashbang was deployed with no response, SWAT officers moved in and took McNary into custody. Officers began providing medical aid until Indianapolis emergency services personnel arrived. McNary was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. A rifle was lying on the ground next to McNary. A handgun was found in his vehicle. Two IMPD patrol vehicles were damaged by gunfire. No officers or uninvolved community members were physically harmed in this incident.
