Senate confirms 48 Trump nominees at once after GOP changed the chamber’s rules

The Senate confirmed 48 of President Donald Trump’s nominees in a single vote under new rules designed to clear a backlog of executive branch appointments delayed by Democrats.

The 51-47 vote marks the first use of rules allowing multiple lower-level, non-judicial nominees to be approved with a simple majority, bypassing prior Democratic stalling tactics.

Confirmed nominees include Jonathan Morrison as administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece.

Republicans defended the change as fixing a “broken process,” while Democrats criticized it as giving Trump unchecked power to fill positions quickly, PBS News has reported.

Senate leaders said more confirmations are planned to address the remaining backlog of over 100 pending nominations.
