Alachua County Sheriff's Office released body-cam footage of a fatal standoff

Alachua, FL - The Alachua County Sheriff's Office on Sept. 17 posted body-cam footage of an armed standoff in July that ended with the death of the suspect just east of the University of Florida campus.

Samuel Edgardo Rivera was shot and killed July 29 after reportedly pointing a handgun at members of the ACSO SWAT team.

During the more than 8-minute video, deputies can be seen knocking on the door of Rivera's residence at about 7:50 a.m. to serve a felony arrest warrant for "possession of a controlled substance without a prescription."

After several minutes of knocking, Rivera's girlfriend answers the door while holding a knife. The girlfriend then drops the knife as instructed by the deputies and points in the direction of Rivera's bedroom.

Members of the warrant team then enter the apartment and position themselves outside of the bedroom. A single shot is then fired from inside the bedroom.

"Shots fired, shots fired, back out, backup, backup, backup" a deputy yells out in the video.

The warrant team then leaves the apartment.

According to the video, Rivera in a phone call with a deputy says that he is hesitant to come out because a K-9 unit is present. In an effort to calm Rivera down, the deputy on the phone tells him that the K-9 is outside and not at the front door.

"The dog is actually not near the front door. I need you step out of the room with your hands up," the deputy says.

As the conversation continues, the deputy in the video appears to repeat what Rivera says.

“Huh? You’re not going back to prison?” the deputy says.

A GPD negotiator's body-worn camera then shows a portion of her conversation with Rivera, who is heard crying and saying that he feels trapped, but repeats once more that he is not going back to prison.

The video then switches to a different body cam and a member of sheriff’s office through a public address system informs Rivera that he is under arrest and to come out with his hands up.

By 11:01 a.m., Rivera had not complied and told negotiators and a relative that he was going to commit suicide.

A minute later, the SWAT team deploys tear gas and Rivera fires multiple gunshots through a side window toward deputies.

The video shows two bullet holes in the side window.

At 11:07 a.m., the SWAT team deploys additional tear gas rounds through the same window, which causes Rivera to move from the bedroom to the front door.

A camera attached to a bomb robot positioned outside of the front door, according to ACSO, showed Rivera holding and pointing a handgun at deputies.

"Gun in his hand. Gun in his hand. Sammy come out. Gun pointed this way! Come out with empty hands, and you will not be shot," a SWAT team member says.

One SWAT team member can be heard on the video saying multiple times that Rivera has the gun to his neck.

“Sammy, drop the gun and surrender to us,” a deputy says.

From there, an ACSO SWAT team member fires one shot at Rivera. Law enforcement initially believes that Rivera may have shot himself.

SWAT team members, according to the video, then entered Rivera's apartment and found him dead at the scene.

No other injuries during the incident were reported.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, is investigating the incident.
