South Park Sold Out

South Park’s myopic obsession with Trump in Season 27 makes it feel like South Park has sold out. Gone are the days where South Park took equal aim at both sides, where nuance, cleverness, and humor were central to their social & political criticisms. Season 27 of South Park has replaced those core tenets with anger, pettiness, and zealousness all directed at
Trump and his ilk, and their opinions & jokes have become indistinguishable from those of Late Night Hosts or CNN, an undeniable departure from their former position where their voice was considered an outlier in the media industrial complex. Mix this in with allowing some of their previous episodes to be banned and how much they’re recycling their own jokes, and South Park is barely even a shell of its former self. And after inking a $1.5 billion deal, it’s hard to ignore how much it feels like Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park, have sold out.
