On CNN, Montel Williams described Charlie Kirk’s killer, Tyler Robinson, as a “child wounded by love” who was driven more by emotions than by politics. According to Williams, Robinson was likely going through his first serious relationship and was trying to defend the person he loved, not support an ideology. He added that Robinson stayed in the building for 30 minutes before shooting and supposedly waited until he heard the first mention of the word “trans” to open fire, which Williams interpreted as a gesture to defend his partner.

However, these statements have faced strong criticism. Scott Jennings, a political commentator and also a guest on CNN, flatly rejected Williams’s interpretation. He pointed out that the known evidence shows Robinson was motivated by political and ideological reasons. Jennings recalled that Robinson wrote: “Charlie Kirk, I can’t stand your hate anymore. I’m going to take you out.” In addition, family testimonies claim Robinson had radicalized into leftist ideas, while text messages seized by police and bullet casings inscribed with anti-conservative and anti-Kirk phrases further supported this view.

Thus, Montel Williams’s remarks have been seen by critics as an attempt to downplay the political motivation behind the murder, contradicting the available evidence and sparking controversy in public opinion.
