In his September 15, 2025, opening monologue Kimmel said about the reaction to the killing of Charlie Kirk that "[w]e hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it". At the time these comments were made, a motive for the killing had not been revealed by officials, with FBI investigators refusing to discuss the suspected assassin's political leanings or possible motive due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. However, the Utah County Attorney, Jeff Gray, stated that the mother of the suspected assassin had said her son started leaning more to the Left and "becoming more pro-gay and trans-rights orientated".
The next day, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said on Benny Johnson's The Benny Show podcast that the comment was "some of the sickest conduct possible" and raised the possibility that there would be regulatory action against ABC and Disney. Hours later, Nexstar Media Group announced that it would pull Jimmy Kimmel Live! from all of its ABC-affiliated stations, and shortly after that ABC announced all broadcasts of the show would be halted "indefinitely". According to The New York Times, the decision to suspend the show was made by Robert Iger, the chief executive of ABC's parent company Disney, and Dana Walden, Disney's television chief.
