Did Terence Crawford Silence His Critics?

In the lead-up to the Canelo Alvarez fight, critics question whether Terence Crawford could take Canelo's punches. Critics labeled Terence Crawford "chinny" because, in 2014, while toying with Gamboa in the 9th round, Crawford dropped his hands while backing up and was hit clean with a left hook.

So, had it not been for Crawford's showboating, that never would have happened. However, in that same round, Crawford knocked out Gamboa, scoring the 4th knockdown of the fight.

That fight occurred on June 28, 2014, when Crawford was the WBO lightweight champion. In the 4th round, Gamboa’s speed and sharp combinations caught Crawford clean in that round, stunning him and forcing Crawford to regroup.

It was the first time in Crawford’s career that he looked genuinely buzzed. After that moment, Crawford made adjustments — notably switching to southpaw — and gradually took control of the fight before scoring four knockdowns and stopping Gamboa in Round 9.

Critics questioned Terence Crawford's chin after this fight 11 years ago. But look at the context in which this sequence happened. The narrative was that Crawford has a weak chin because of Gamboa.

Gamboa was a gold medalist with a record of 23-0 at the time, with 16 knockouts. He was known for blazing hand speed and explosive combinations. He was also very athletic.

If Crawford has such a weak chin, how can Canelo hurt Crawford? Why was Canelo unable to knock Crawford out? Why was Canelo unable to drop Crawford?

Canelo landed some straight right hands on Crawford that would drop or knock out most opponents, but he couldn't knock out the older, smaller, inactive, chinny Terence Crawford. Why is that?
