My name is Queen Elizabeth I, and I was born in 1533, the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. My childhood was dangerous, for when my mother was executed, I was declared illegitimate, and my place in the line of succession was uncertain. I survived by keeping my mind sharp and my words cautious. I was well educated, learning languages, philosophy, and history, which prepared me for the throne I would one day inherit. When my sister Mary died in 1558, I became queen at the age of twenty-five. My reign, which lasted forty-five years, was filled with challenges—religious division, threats of invasion, and rival powers seeking to crush England. I worked to balance Protestant and Catholic tensions with the Elizabethan Settlement and encouraged voyages of exploration led by men like Francis Drake. Perhaps my greatest test was facing the Spanish Armada in 1588, when I stood before my troops at Tilbury and declared that though I had the body of a weak woman, I had the heart and stomach of a king. England triumphed, and my reign became known as a golden age of culture, trade, and power. I never married, choosing instead to rule alone, and when I died in 1603, I left behind a stronger, prouder England.
