My name is Don Álvaro de Bazán, and I was born in 1526 in Granada, Spain. From the start, the sea was in my blood, for my father was a naval commander, and I followed his path from a young age. I first fought against the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean, learning how to command men and ships. My greatest pride came in 1571, when I helped organize the fleet of the Holy League for the Battle of Lepanto. Though I did not lead in the fighting, my preparations ensured victory over the Ottoman Turks, saving Europe from their advance. Later, I defeated the French and Portuguese at sea, securing Spain’s rule over Portugal and earning the title of Marquis of Santa Cruz. Yet even as I rose in rank, a new enemy appeared: England, with captains like Francis Drake who raided our ports and ships. I was chosen to prepare the Armada that would crush them, but death claimed me before it sailed. They call me undefeated, for I never lost a battle while alive. I served my king and my faith with loyalty, and though the Armada failed after me, I remain remembered as one of Spain’s greatest admirals.
