Matanza was a Brazilian rock band , formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1996, which remained active until 2018. Their music was a mixture of hardcore punk , country and heavy metal , thus forming the genre that the media titled " countrycore ".

History
Matanza was created in 1996 by Jimmy and Donida , with the idea of exploring the melodies from the early stages of American singer Johnny Cash's career , adapted to a tempo similar to that heard by the Scottish band The Exploited . This embryonic lineup was completed by drummer Nervoso and bassist Diba, recorded on the 1998 demo Terror em Dashville .

In 1999, a new recording caught the attention of producer Rafael Ramos, leading Matanza to sign with the now-defunct Abril Music label for the release of their first CD. Now featuring China on bass, "Santa Madre Cassino" was recorded in December 2000 and released in March of the following year, shortly before the band was dropped from the label.

Matanza joined Deckdisc with Rafael Ramos and recorded their second album, Música para Beber e Brigar , at Tambor Studio, with Fausto on drums. On this album, the tracks "Pé na Porta, Soco na Cara" and "Bom é Quando Faz Mal" received music videos directed by Eduardo Kurt, who was also responsible for the song "Ela Roubou Meu Caminhão" from their first album, and by all the members who would later compose the Johnny Cash tribute.

The To Hell With Johnny Cash project began as a four-song single that the band used to play at their shows, but soon they had budgeted three singles, with 12 songs in total. In early 2005, with the emergence of new media, the project took on the air of a career album, and the result was a CD-DVD, recognized as the first DualDisc title by a Brazilian artist in Brazil.

The album A Arte do Insulto was recorded in mid-2006 and released in October of the same year. The album's promotional work also included the music video for "Clube dos Canalhas", directed by Rudi Lagemann and photographed by Tuca Andrade, and the magazine Matanza Comix , with comics by Alan Sieber , Arnaldo Branco , Daniel Etê , among others, as well as Donida himself, the publication's editor.

The album Matanza Ao Vivo, recorded at Hangar 110 (São Paulo) in December 2008 and directed by Romi Atarashi , features Jonas on drums and marks the transition to a new phase. Guitarist Donida leaves the stage to dedicate himself exclusively to composing the band's material. His place on stage is taken by Maurício Nogueira (Ex -Torture Squad ). [ 1 ]

Five years after A Arte do Insulto , Matanza releases Odiosa Natureza Humana , in March, by Deckdisc . The fifth studio album (and fourth of new songs) began to be made in 2010 and was recorded in three days, live, with reel-to-reel tape (without digital arrangements) and produced by Rafael Ramos at Tambor studio.

In 2012, Matanza released their sixth studio album, Thunder Dope . On this album the band re-recorded some tracks from previously released demos: "Goredoom Jamboree" and "Matanza in Idaho" (from Terror in Dashville ) and "Devil Horse" (from Back to Tombstone ).

In 2015, the band announced the departure of bassist China, replaced by Dony Escobar. According to the group itself, China left Matanza because he wanted to start playing only guitar. [ 2 ] Before leaving, he participated in the recording of the band's seventh album of new songs, Pior Cenário Possível, released in April of the same year. [ 3 ] being the first studio work to have Maurício involved in the composition process. [ 2 ]

End of Matanza, beginning of Matanza Inc. and Matanza Ritual
In May 2018, the band announced that it would end its activities in October of the same year due to "personal issues that need to be addressed, professional possibilities that need to be contemplated and artistic needs that (...) lead to [sic] different paths". [ 4 ]

The former members split into two groups, on one side vocalist Jimmy London, and on the other Marco Donida, Maurício Nogueira, Dony Escobar and Jonas Cáffaro.

In early 2019, Marco, Maurício, Dony and Jonas formed Matanza Inc , with vocalist Vital Cavalcante replacing Jimmy London. [ 5 ]

Also in 2019, Jimmy London forms the band Matanza Ritual , with Felipe Andreoli (bass, also from Angra ), Antônio Araújo (guitar, Korzus ) and Amílcar Christófaro (drums, Torture Squad ).

Side projects
Former bassist and guitarist China and Donida have a side project called Enterro. It's a black metal band that released its first independent CD, Nunc Scio Tenebris Lux , in 2008 .
