The Massacre of the Holy Innocents refers to the killing of male children in Bethlehem two years old and under, ordered by King Herod the Great after the visit of the Magi (Matthew 2:16–18). Fearing the prophecy of a new “King of the Jews,” Herod sought to eliminate the upcoming Savior and Messiah. King Herod, was highly driven by spite and resentment of the people, for popular sentiment he was a Roman Puppet, and was not the legitimate King of Judea. The Church venerates these children as the first martyrs for Christ, for although they did not know Him personally, their blood was shed because of Him. By their death, they became Witnesses, Martyrs, and are honored as Saints.
The Catholic Church commemorates the Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs on December 28th. This day highlights the paradox of joy and sorrow: the joy of Christ’s birth and the sorrow of innocent suffering. The liturgical color is red, symbolizing martyrdom. Spiritually, the Holy Innocents remind the faithful of the cost of discipleship, the reality of sin’s violence, and the redeeming mission of Christ, who came to conquer death and injustice. They symbolize purity of faith and the vulnerability of the most innocent, calling Christians to cherish life and trust in the saving power of Christ.
