Within every genre, the relationship between old and new is a defining feature:
Building on the past: New artists consistently draw inspiration from the music that came before them. For example, modern dance-pop still owes a debt to the disco and funk of the 70s.
Reacting against tradition: Newer music can also be a reaction against the conventions of the old. This often creates a fresh sound, but it can alienate longtime fans of a genre.
Nostalgia and tributes: "Old" music also stays relevant through tribute bands, cover songs, and artists directly referencing sounds and styles from previous decades
