Feast Day
• September 15 – celebrated the day after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
• The Church commemorates Mary’s unique sharing in the sufferings of her Son.
The Seven Sorrows of Mary
Traditionally, devotion focuses on seven sorrows (or dolors) that pierced Mary’s heart:
1. The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25–35) – Simeon tells Mary a sword will pierce her soul.
2. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13–15) – Mary and Joseph flee with the Infant Jesus.
3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41–50).
4. Mary Meets Jesus Carrying the Cross (Luke 23:27–31; John 19:17).
5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:25–30).
6. The Body of Jesus Placed in Mary’s Arms (Luke 23:55–56).
7. The Burial of Jesus (Luke 23:55–56).
Spiritual Meaning
• Mary is honored as the Mother of Sorrows, standing faithfully at the foot of the Cross.
• She teaches us how to unite our sufferings with Christ’s redemptive Passion.
• The devotion reminds us that suffering, when offered in love, becomes a path to salvation.
Devotion
• The Rosary (or Chaplet) of the Seven Sorrows is a special prayer honoring these sorrows.
• The Servite Order (Servants of Mary) has promoted this devotion since the 13th century.
• Mary is often depicted with seven swords piercing her Immaculate Heart, symbolizing her sorrows.
The message of Our Lady of Sorrows is one of compassion, perseverance in faith, and sharing in Christ’s redemptive suffering.
