Toppled, exiled, doomed: The Curse of Xi Jinping

It seems that whenever a world leader meets Xi Jinping, misfortune follows. They either stumble into bad luck or make reckless choices that lead to disaster. Vladimir Putin, for example, has taken dangerous turns every time he met with Xi. But Putin is not the only one. At least nine other leaders—spanning both democratic nations and authoritarian regimes—have been toppled, forced to resign, or dragged into political crises. Is this the “Xi Jinping Curse” at work? From Nepal’s communist prime minister to Syria’s dictator, to democratically elected leaders in Japan and South Korea, world leaders appear doomed to bad luck the closer they get to the CCP.
