Arab and Islamic leaders are gathering in Doha for an emergency summit to address Israel’s recent attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar.
While Qatar has urged firm measures, it has also pledged to continue mediation over the Gaza war. Mohamad Elmasry, professor at the Doha Institute, said options on the table include sanctions, airspace closures, support for South Africa’s ICJ case and even a joint military alliance.
However, he warned that expectations are too high, given the diverging interests of participating states. He argued the Abraham Accords have harmed the Palestinian cause but doubted that signatories such as the UAE or Morocco would withdraw.
Elmasry stressed that Israel’s ambition for regional dominance threatens all Middle Eastern countries.
He noted Israel’s threats after the Doha attack and reports of attempted actions in Egypt, as evidence that no state is safe from escalation.
