Sport and physical exercise: preservatives of physical and mental health.

Sports are a type of activity that engages a large number of people, and are a shared hobby. This allows us to find common ground with others and facilitates connection with them. Furthermore, there are a large number of exercises or sports, such as soccer or basketball, that have teamwork as one of their main foundations.

On the other hand, physical exercise influences mental health through various biological mechanisms. In this sense, studies have shown that physical exercise increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that promotes neuronal plasticity and protects against cognitive decline. One of the most studied is the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that act as natural painkillers and generate a feeling of well-being. Serotonin, in particular, plays a crucial role in stabilizing mood and preventing depression. Another important mechanism is neurogenesis, the process by which new neurons are generated in the hippocampus, a brain region linked to memory and emotions.

These biological processes explain why sport and physical exercise not only improve mood but also strengthen mental resilience. Furthermore, sport and physical exercise improve blood circulation and oxygenation of the brain, which promotes optimal cognitive function and reduces the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
