So THERE I WAS, siPPING my coffee, flippin’ through the Baltimore Sun— JUST TRYING TO stay informed while potholes IN THE CITY GROW big enough to swallow a Prius—and what do I see? The House of representatives just passed the NDAA. That’s the National Defense Authorization Act for you folks who never worked for the government.

Price tag? Oh, just a casual $862.6 billion. That’s billion with a “B”—enough money to buy every crab cake in Maryland twice over and still have change left for A NATTY BOH.

Now, for sixty years this has been a bipartisan slam-dunk. Republicans, Democrats and everything in between, they all hold hands, sing “Kumbaya,” and agree, “Yeah, maybe we should fund the military so America doesn’t get clobbered.”
But not this time. Oh no. This time? Things got spicy.
