This song combines two different poems/prayers.
~ Verses no. 1, 3, and 5 are from “Be Thou My Vision”, an ancient Irish prayer (translated by Mary E. Byrne, 1905; versed by Eleanor H. Hull, 1912, alt.).
~ The second prayer (verses no. 2, 4, and 6), “More Love To Thee, O Christ” was written by Elizabeth P. Prentiss in 1869.

“Be Thou My Vision” (1.3.5)
“More Love To Thee, O Christ” (2.4.6.)

1.
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

2.
Once earthly joy I craved, sought peace and rest;
Now thee alone I seek, give what is best.
This all my prayer shall be: More love, O Christ to thee;
More love to thee, more love to thee!

3.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
Great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.

4.
Let sorrow do its work, come grief and pain;
Sweet are thy messengers, sweet their refrain,
When they can sing with me: More love, O Christ, to thee;
More love to thee, more love to thee.

5.
Great God of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

6.
Then shall my latest breath whisper thy praise;
This be the parting cry my heart shall raise;
This still its prayer shall be: More love, O Christ, to thee;
More love to thee, more love to thee!
