Burning Spear - Live in Paris (Zenith '88) is the second live album by Jamaican reggae singer Burning Spear, released in 1988. This classic album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 32nd Grammy Awards in 1990. This video captures 1 hour of the legendary concert in remastered audio and video quality.
For more than 20 years, Winston Rodney — better known as Burning Spear — has been one of reggae music’s most consistent and enduring forces, if not its most essential embodiment. Singing in a unique, soulful growl, the beloved Spear is known for his commitment to the African chant style, as well as his potently heavy, penetrating sound. He has largely devoted his life and art to the teaching of black history, in particular the work of Marcus Garvey. (Like Garvey and Bob Marley, Rodney was born in St. Ann’s, Jamaica.)
Spear’s concerts are legendary; he frequently reaches unknown heights in a hypnotic trance. The extraordinarily clean-sounding two-LP Live in Paris — his first concert album since 1978’s Live (which was done in London, with Aswad behind him) — captures Spear in the throes of his 1988 tour, performing songs from Mistress Music and People of the World, as well as some early classics. The Burning Band lays out the groove and blazes the path for Spear’s lift-off.
Reggae enthusiasts, gather around! Today we embark on a vibrant journey through the pulsating live performances of the legendary Burning Spear. Known for his dynamic stage presence and the electrifying connection he establishes with his audience, Winston Rodney, a.k.a. Burning Spear, has not only crafted timeless studio albums but also some of the most unforgettable live recordings in the history of reggae music. Let’s dive into each of these live albums, exploring their unique vibes, historical contexts, and the undying spirit of live reggae music.
Moving on to the late 1980s, “Live in Paris Zenith ’88” showcases a matured artist who had already left a significant mark on the world of music. This album, released by Slash Records, captures Burning Spear at a zenith of his career, performing to a captivated audience in Paris. The setlist includes not only the classics but also newer tracks that demonstrate his evolving artistry and continued relevance. The energy of this recording is palpable, filled with the hypnotic rhythms and chants that invite the listener to become part of a larger, global reggae family. This live album is a testament to Rodney’s enduring appeal and his ability to connect with diverse audiences across the globe.
Our restoration project video was sourced from publicly available low quality material of the 2002 original (VHS/DVD?) (credit: @rastavibration) and captures close to 60 minutes of the concert. It is not a full concert registration contrary how it is often being advertised. The audio is a remaster of the original double CD.
We’ve created this video as well as a dub mashup available on Soundcloud ‘Dub au Zenith’ blends all the dubs from this album into one mix capturing the energy and intensity of the full recording.
