Bill Gates explains the race for a covid vaccine
Gates published a promotional video for his covid “vaccines” on 30 April 2020.
“Humankind has never had a more urgent task than creating broad immunity for coronavirus. Realistically, if we’re going to return to normal, we need to develop a safe, effective vaccine - and we need to do it faster than we’ve ever developed a vaccine before. CEPI
The Coalition for Emergency Preparedness Innovations was founded in Davos in 2017 to accelerate the development of vaccines to avert epidemics and ensure their equitable distribution. Government actors and other institutions collaborate with the private sector and civil society organisations to promote the vaccine search and improve its international coordination.
CEPI's support is intended to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies work on vaccines against new pathogens whose market potential is not yet known. After all, the development of vaccines, including the necessary testing, is expensive. CEPI argues that pandemics cause not only great human suffering but also enormous economic damage, making investments in vaccines worthwhile.
CEPI also promotes the development of enabling technologies that could enable faster vaccine development. The alliance builds stockpiles of existing vaccines even before epidemics break out.
GAVI
The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) is more practical than CEPI. To achieve its long-term goal of providing access to immunisation for all children worldwide, it funds immunisation programs in developing countries and strengthens their health systems. About a dozen vaccines against preventable, life-threatening diseases are currently funded by GAVI, including those against tetanus, pertussis, measles, rotavirus, pneumococcus, and polio.
All countries supported by GAVI must contribute to the cost of vaccination and increase their financial contribution as their economic output grows. To give Gavi planning certainty and thus the ability to acquire vaccines at low and affordable prices, donor countries make long-term financial commitments. The Alliance also collaborates with institutions such as the WHO, the World Bank, and UNICEF, as well as with non-governmental organisations and the private sector. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has supported Gavi's work since 2006.
UNITAID
The International Facility for the Purchase of Medicines negotiates low prices for medicines thanks to its extensive resources and the resulting high purchase volumes. Unitaid has so far limited itself to the fight against HIV and AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis C. Unitaid relies on more than 40 partner organisations, including the Global Fund and the Gates Foundation, to distribute medicines.
GLOBAL FUND
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria has set itself the task of ending these three epidemics. To this end, the international organisation invests four billion dollars (3.64 billion euros) annually in more than 100 countries. Ninety-three per cent of the funding comes from governments, with the remainder provided by the private sector and foundations. According to the Global Fund, hundreds of millions of people have already benefited from its health programs, saving 32 million lives.
GATES FOUNDATION
Founded in 1999 by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, the foundation is particularly dedicated to global health and invests heavily in vaccination programs for children in India and Africa. The foundation, with assets of $43 billion, was also the second-largest donor to the World Health Organisation (WHO) after the United States last year and the organisation's largest private supporter.
Since January, the foundation has donated a total of $250 million in the fight against the novel coronavirus. A large portion of the money will go towards the development of drugs for the lung disease covid-19 and vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, with another portion going towards supporting poor countries in the fight against the pandemic.
WELLCOME TRUST
Founded in 1936 by entrepreneur Henry Wellcome, the foundation promotes innovative ideas in medicine and has assets of £26.8 billion (€30.5 billion) for this purpose. The Wellcome Trust intends to spend £5 billion of this in the next five years alone.
The foundation conducts studies on scientific and medical topics, trains healthcare workers, and promotes the development of vaccines, such as the recent one against Ebola. Its current mission also includes actively promoting investment in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
