Why weren't some early church fathers baptized as infants?

The Church has always and unanimously believed that baptism forgives sins and is necessary for salvation. However, while the baptizing of infants has always been a practice within the Church, many chose to not baptize their children. For example, Augustine, Jerome, Ambrose, and other prominent early Church Fathers were not baptized as infants. And some, sadly, use this as a reason to not baptize their children. God forbid! So, the key question is why? Why weren’t they baptized as an infant? It’s actually easily explainable.

Now, what’s interesting is that many of these prominent early Church Fathers like Augustine, Jerome, Ambrose, Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and others who were all NOT baptized as an infant all later supported infant baptism. Augustine believed infant baptism to be both necessary and apostolic while John Chrysostom stated that, “salvation is not dependent on intellectual capacity” in arguing for infant baptism.

As in many cases those who oppose Catholic teaching do so without being truly open to the truth. Where they see something nefarious or erroneous is just them being blinded by their bias. Hopefully this short video will help you address this concern if it ever comes up. May God bless you on your Catholic faith journey!
