Methodology overview and results - Stand A, Treatment 2
In this video I go over some of my updated methodology on bush honeysuckle removal. Stand C (the first stand I started this journey on) is officially complete from all three treatments. Stand B will be getting its initial treatment once I finish Stand A’s second treatment. Stand A, where this video is taken, is just starting its second treatment where I incorporate a splitting-maul into my methodology.
The maul allows me to loosen up stubborn root balls for medium sized stems, and break apart old stumps that were the result of the land owner attempting to treat the forest with a mulcher/brush hog years ago that survived. This means a little more physical labor added, but allows for much less chemical treatment and re-treatment of exceptionally vigorous individuals.
Switching over to sectioning off strips and blocks of the forest to treat, using temporary electric fence stakes, has helped tremendously in overall successful detection of bush honeysuckle stubs to pull. Also, in this zone, I had left more of a stem for each larger plant that I cut last year so it gives me a little more to grab ahold of with the Pullerbear I am using. Results are showing a more thorough initial treatment where survival is greatly reduced, and the native regeneration of understory species has been wonderful to witness.

A little bit on where I come from:
I am a graduate from SUNY – College of Environmental Science with a B.S. in Wildlife Science
I graduated from SUNY – ESF Ranger School extension with an A.A.S in Environmental and Natural Resource Conservation
Spent 4 years working various public sector seasonal technician jobs around states like Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, South Carolina, and New York until I decided to turn to Private Sector work.
I mostly tackle Timber Stand Improvement projects, with a focus on wildlife habitat features and sustainable growth through thinning treatments and soil-building techniques. I strive to utilize regenerative forestry as my core focus when providing any services.
My hope is that with this channel I can introduce land owners to some basic management practices and techniques that can help them work on their own properties, or know what to look for when hiring a private forester to come work on their land if they want to follow the methods I use for my own work.
