Yes, a smartphone-free childhood is possible, says Clare Morell.

She studied families who raised teens without smartphones—and found the principles they used to succeed.

Here’s the roadmap 👇

🔹 Step 1: The Fast
Start with a 30-day digital detox.

🔹 Step 2: The FEAST
The key to sustaining a smartphone-free childhood is what she calls the FEAST framework:

F – Find other families.
Connect with people who share your values. It’s much easier when your kids aren’t the only ones without smartphones.

E – Educate, Explain, Exemplify
Teach your kids about digital harms. Model balanced, healthy tech use yourself.

A – Adopt alternatives
Don’t jump to a smartphone. Use alternative phone options that provide calls/texts and other essential functions but not addictive apps. Delay smartphones until absolutely necessary.

S – Set screen rules
Establish digital accountability. Shared TV instead of isolated screens. Computers in public spaces. Use computers as tools (think research, computer coding project, etc. not mindless entertainment).

T – Trade screens for real-life responsibility
Start with giving kids more responsibilities around the home and then give them more independence outside the home (ex. Bike to a neighbor’s house or start a first job mowing lawns or babysitting.) Build independence and resilience.
