Brazil’s Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years after landmark coup plot conviction

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election.

The Supreme Court ruling, issued by a five-justice panel, made Bolsonaro the first former president in Brazil’s history convicted of attacking democracy, drawing disapproval from the Trump administration.

Justice Carmen Lucia highlighted that Bolsonaro acted “with the purpose of eroding democracy and institutions,” referencing Brazil’s history of coups and democratic struggles.

Four of the five judges convicted Bolsonaro of five crimes, including leading an armed criminal organization, attempting to abolish democracy, organizing a coup, and damaging government property and cultural assets.

Bolsonaro joins other right-wing leaders worldwide facing legal consequences, such as Marine Le Pen and Rodrigo Duterte.

U.S. President Donald Trump called the conviction a “terrible thing” and had previously labeled the case a “witch hunt,” imposing tariffs, sanctions on the presiding judge, and visa restrictions on high court justices, Reuters has reported.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers condemned the sentence as “absurdly excessive” and announced plans to appeal.
