Netanyahu made major ‘gamble’ with Doha attack

We have spoken with Israeli affairs analyst Dan Perry about the motives and impact of Israel’s attack on Hamas leadership in Doha.

Perry estimates that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main goal was simply “to kill every Hamas leader he can get his hands on”.

“I tend to think that the simple answer is the more likely one,” he said, though adding that Netanyahu may also have been trying to “blow up” ceasefire talks and prolong the war to preserve his fragile government coalition.

“Netanyahu’s goal is to basically get Hamas to surrender, get back the hostages and compel the disarmament of Hamas,” Perry said. “What he wants after that no one knows because he is standing in the way of the global preference for some version of the PA [Palestinian Authority] to enter Gaza in Hamas’s stead.”

Going ahead with the attack, however, Perry noted, was a huge “gamble” for Netanyahu for which he is now receiving widespread backlash.

“I can tell you he is being criticised for this, not just by most of the world and Qatar and the Arab world, including countries Israel needs by its side like Egypt, but also much of Israel,” said Perry.
