OOPS...That Was Ugly

Hmmmm how far is the east from the west? Is it even measurable? Do you swing from east to west or north to south like a pendulum? Do you stop at the top of your swing or do you have a smooth, unbroken swing through. Got a complicated or uncomplicated swing? When you swing and just let the club do the work then you have a good shot. In or lives we can mess up because we try so hard, we try to fix things, we get in God’s Lane and we make things worse. Just stop. Admit your mistake. God will take back what we tried to do and fix it, making a message out of our mess. A mistake, is not a dead end for us. God always gives us a new day. He forgives, He forgets. Grace is not earned, it is gifted, and it is similar to mercy in that we receive something we did not deserve. In the game of golf, one bad hole does not make a bad golfer.

Like golf, a distracted life can stop us at the top of our swing, and when we swing through the result is not good. Condemnation distracts us in this life, when we let shame take over us, when we let thoughts come into our mind that say: You are bad and you are just going to have a bad life. When we walk out to a tee to hit our drive with the self-condemnation from the last tee off that went bad, this one won’t be much better. We should kick-drop the condemnation, get out of here…. Condemnation, it is not from God, it is from your enemy. God does not condemn us, God teaches us and helps us grow through our messy times in that transforming way of His. God changes us! He never gives up on us. God is constant!

Don’t get in your head, you are not going to have a bad round because of one bad swing. So we get into our flesh, and do something impulsively that we really should not have done. Ask for forgiveness and receive it and move forward. We get distracted, we try to hard to make a good shot, we get into our head and our swing and is not fluid, it is jerky and hard driven and not a good result. Life is like that too when we serve no power higher than self, it doesn’t end pretty. What do we do? Do we give up? No! We ask for forgiveness and we move on. God forgives, God forgets and throws our sins as far as the east is from the west. We are not going to have a bad life because we had one bad swing, there are many other golf rounds to play.

The mercy of God extends itself every single morning, it is like a reset, and it is faithfully new every morning, and every day we can have a new day. Same in golf, you may just had a ridiculously bad hole, your driver did not work, your irons were horrible, your chip went south, and you three putted, but you have many more holes to redeem yourself. It’s not over! Why get in your head with self-condemning self talk? If you have a bad shot, why say: Why do I even play this game? I am no good at it? NO… you start the new hole, brand new, with a whole new start. From hole to hole we have a chance to have those perfect swings, those perfect chips, those perfect putts. You are not knocked out because of one bad swing. So if you had a bad swing this last hole, shake it off, step up to the tee and do better and let yourself be great, and enjoy the rest of your game. God bless ya.
