The Teachings of Pythagoras: Philosophy and Mathematics

According to Manly P. Hall's "The Secret Teachings of All Ages" Pythagorean philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that numbers are the fundamental principle of the universe. According to Pythagoras and his followers, all reality is structured through numerical relationships, and mathematics is not merely a tool for measurement, but a means of understanding the harmony, order, and divine structure of existence. The Pythagoreans taught that arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy are all interconnected, with arithmetic as the “mother of the sciences” because it underlies all others. Numbers were viewed not just as quantities but as symbols carrying spiritual and metaphysical significance. Each number possessed intrinsic qualities and symbolic meanings, which reflected cosmic principles, the nature of human life, and the structure of the cosmos. The Pythagoreans also explored the mystical qualities of numbers through classification, combinations, and their interactions. Odd and even numbers represented masculine and feminine principles, while specific numbers like the monad (one), duad (two), triad (three), and decad (ten) had special spiritual, ethical, and cosmological significance. Their teachings connected the macrocosm and microcosm: the universe’s structure mirrored mathematical relationships, and human life reflected these same numerical harmonies. Pythagorean thought extended beyond pure mathematics into ethics, cosmology, music, and spiritual development, portraying a universe ordered by intelligence and numerical law.
