In the spring of 1743, on the Isle of Lewis where the Atlantic’s breath carves the land, the Callanish Stones rise from the earth like giants frozen in time. Known as the Fir Chreig, the False Men, these thirteen monoliths form a circle thirty-seven feet wide, their avenues of lesser stones stretching toward the unknown. Legends whisper of Druids, of men turned to stone for defying ancient gods, and of a burial chamber at the circle’s heart, where bones of the sacrificed lie beneath a shadowed slab. Into this world of mystery and menace steps, Sophie, a crofter’s daughter whose curiosity will unravel a secret older than the hills and bind her to the stones’ eternal watch.
