Riverside County deputies shoots suspect who reached for a loaded gun

Cherry Valley, CA - A Redlands man who was shot by a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday in Cherry Valley was reaching for a loaded gun when the shooting occurred, authorities say.

Justin Perry James, 45, was at a home in the 9000 block of Oak Glen Road about noon Tuesday when deputies in the Valley Regional Gang Team went to the house while “conducting a follow-up investigation,” according to a Sheriff’s Department news release issued Wednesday. James had been identified as a member of an Inland gang prior to the incident, the news release said.

When deputies approached the home, they saw James — who was inside — run toward the back and exit through a side door, the news release said. While deputies chased James, they noticed a “black object” in his right hand.

James led deputies into a wooded wash area east of the house, while ignoring their commands for him to stop, the news release said. As they neared the bottom of the wash, a deputy saw James reach into his waistband and turn toward them.

The deputy, “fearing for his safety,” fired at James, striking him, the news release said. The suspect was taken into custody and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies found a loaded pistol in the area where James was shot.

Jail records show that James had not been booked into jail by Wednesday afternoon.
