Biography of Abu al-Hasan Sari (al-Sari)
Assalamu Alaikum, sisters, brothers, friends and elders, we welcome you to a series of videos on Muslim heritage and Islamic scholars. and today in this video we will describe biography Abu al-Hasan Sari (al-Sari)
Abu al-Hasan Sari ibn al-Mughallis al-Saqti, more commonly known as Sari al-Saqti, was one of the earliest and most revered Muslim Sufi saints of Baghdad. He was born in the city of Baghdad around the year 776, during the time of the Abbasid Caliphate when the capital was at its peak as a center of political power, scholarship, and spiritual growth. Raised in a devout family, Sari was exposed to the traditions of Islamic learning from a young age. His family encouraged him to seek both outward knowledge and inward spiritual understanding. This balance of faith and learning eventually shaped him into one of the leading figures of early Sufism.
As a young man, Sari al-Saqti was deeply influenced by his uncle Ma‘ruf al-Karkhi, a renowned ascetic and saint of Baghdad. Under his guidance, Sari developed a strong inclination toward spiritual discipline, devotion to God, and service to others. He spent much of his youth studying Islamic sciences such as Quran, Hadith, and jurisprudence, but his heart leaned toward tasawwuf, the inner dimension of Islam. His devotion was marked by humility, asceticism, and constant remembrance of God. He often avoided public attention and worldly comforts, preferring a simple life dedicated to worship and reflection.
Sari al-Saqti became widely known for his wisdom and spiritual insights. He was part of the first generation of Baghdad’s Sufis, who emphasized purification of the soul, sincerity in worship, and love of God above worldly ambitions. His teachings centered on sincerity of intention, compassion for others, and spiritual detachment. He often warned against arrogance and hypocrisy, insisting that true knowledge was not just intellectual but lived through sincerity of the heart. His words were recorded by his students and transmitted through generations, shaping the development of early Sufi thought.
One of his most famous disciples was Junayd of Baghdad, who later became one of the greatest authorities in Sufi tradition. Sari’s influence on Junayd shows his importance as a bridge between the earliest ascetics of Islam and the organized Sufi schools that developed in later centuries. Junayd often referred to Sari as his master and spoke of the depth of his spiritual state. This connection ensured that Sari al-Saqti’s teachings became a permanent part of the Sufi heritage.
Sari al-Saqti’s life in Baghdad coincided with a time of great intellectual exchange. Scholars of theology, philosophy, jurisprudence, and mysticism debated in the capital, and the atmosphere encouraged both inquiry and devotion. Amid this environment, Sari maintained a balanced path, showing that one could be deeply engaged with the world of knowledge while remaining detached from worldly desires. His reputation grew not only in Baghdad but also throughout the wider Islamic world, and he came to be regarded as one of the true saints of his generation.
Abu al-Hasan Sari al-Saqti passed away in Baghdad in the year 867. His death was mourned by many, especially his students and fellow Sufis, who regarded him as a man of deep sincerity and spiritual purity. He was buried in Baghdad, where his tomb became a place of reverence. Over the centuries, his shrine was visited by scholars, seekers, and common people who wished to honor his memory and seek blessings. Baghdad, being a city rich with the tombs of saints and scholars, counted the resting place of Sari al-Saqti among its sacred heritage.
The shrine of Sari al-Saqti, though modest in structure, carried immense spiritual significance. It stood as a reminder of the early Sufi masters who devoted their lives to God with humility and love. Generations of Muslims remembered him not for wealth or power but for his sincerity of worship and his role as a teacher of saints like Junayd. Despite the trials Baghdad faced over centuries, including wars and invasions, the memory of Sari al-Saqti continued to survive, passed down in the writings of Sufi historians and in the prayers of those who loved the saints of God.
The legacy of Abu al-Hasan Sari al-Saqti is one of devotion, humility, and guidance. His teachings remind Muslims that true spirituality lies in purifying the heart, serving others with compassion, and turning constantly toward God. His life shaped the foundation of Baghdad’s Sufi tradition and influenced generations of mystics who sought to draw closer to the Divine. Today, he is remembered as one of the pillars of early Sufism, a man whose quiet devotion left a lasting imprint on the spiritual history of Islam.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and tomorrow we will narrate biography of . we will also narrate the history of her shrine. Finally, we pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen.
