Al-Rudaani Al-Sisi Al-Maliki Al-Maghribi was a celebrated Moroccan scholar, astronomer, mathematician, and jurist who made a lasting mark in the intellectual history of the Islamic world. He was born in the city of Taroudant in Morocco in the year 1627. His birthplace, a thriving cultural and spiritual center of the Sous region, provided him with access to traditional Islamic education from a young age. He studied the Quran, Hadith, jurisprudence, and Arabic grammar, and quickly distinguished himself as a student of great intellect and dedication. His nisbahs, or scholarly titles, reflected his wide connections: “Al-Sisi” linked him to Sijilmasa, “Al-Maliki” referred to his adherence to the Maliki school of Islamic law, and “Al-Maghribi” denoted his origin from the Maghreb.

Al-Rudaani’s scholarly journey took him far beyond Morocco. In search of advanced knowledge, he traveled extensively to cities renowned for learning, such as Fez, Cairo, Damascus, and Mecca. In Cairo, he became deeply involved in the study of astronomy and mathematics, fields in which he would later excel. His remarkable ability to integrate Islamic law, theology, and the natural sciences distinguished him among his peers. He was widely respected as a polymath who embodied the spirit of the later Islamic Golden Age, where religion and science complemented one another.

Among his greatest contributions was his expertise in astronomy. He carefully studied celestial bodies, planetary motions, and timekeeping, producing important works that contributed to the field of Islamic astronomy. His studies were particularly important for determining prayer times, the lunar calendar, and the direction of the qiblah. Al-Rudaani also became known for his deep understanding of mathematics, which he used as a tool to refine astronomical calculations. His reputation spread widely, and he became one of the most recognized North African scholars of his era.

Al-Rudaani’s brilliance was not confined only to the sciences. He was a jurist in the Maliki tradition and left behind important writings in jurisprudence and Hadith sciences. He authored texts that combined intellectual rigor with spiritual depth, reflecting his belief in the harmony of religious devotion and scientific inquiry. His students praised him as a teacher who encouraged curiosity and balance in the pursuit of knowledge. He was also an inventor and is credited with designing innovative instruments, including improvements to astronomical devices such as the astrolabe, which were used for navigation and observation of the stars.

Throughout his travels, Al-Rudaani also spent time in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, where he taught and studied. His presence in the Haramayn allowed him to interact with scholars from across the Islamic world, strengthening his scholarly network and spreading his influence. His connection with the scholars of Cairo and Damascus further ensured that his works and teachings reached beyond Morocco, leaving an impact on the intellectual heritage of multiple regions.

Al-Rudaani spent his later years dedicated to teaching, writing, and guiding students. He passed away in the year 1683 in Medina, the sacred city of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. His burial in Medina was a fitting honor for a man of his stature, as the city had been a spiritual home for many great scholars before him. His shrine lies in the blessed soil of Medina, where countless companions and scholars are buried. Though his tomb is modest, it has long been remembered by students and admirers of Islamic science as the resting place of a great astronomer and jurist.

The shrine of Al-Rudaani in Medina reflects his dual legacy as both a scholar of religion and a man of science. For centuries, his memory has been preserved by those who valued his contributions to astronomy, mathematics, jurisprudence, and Hadith. His life serves as a reminder of the rich tradition of Muslim scholars who sought to unite the study of the heavens with the guidance of divine revelation. His works continue to be studied in Morocco and the wider Islamic world, ensuring that his name remains alive in the history of knowledge.

Today, Al-Rudaani is remembered as a symbol of Moroccan intellectual heritage and as one of the great scholars whose work bridged North Africa and the broader Islamic scholarly tradition.
