Bay County, FL - Last week, a Bay County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed an armed man.

He was allegedly threatening people with weapons.

On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office released the body camera video, which shows how the whole episode unfolded and the split-second decision the deputy faced.

“There’s a guy in a red maroon long-sleeved shirt and black pants with a chain that is walking with a rifle, not sure of the exact gun,” a witness said.

Early on the morning of Sept 3, Bay County 9-1-1 dispatchers received several calls about an armed man off Webber Road and Highway 231 in Fountain.

“There is a guy walking down Webber Road with an assault rifle in Fountain,” another witness said.

Moments later, a Bay County sheriff’s deputy confronted 45-year-old Justin Chandler Smith.

Sheriff’s officials released the deputy’s body camera video showing how he tried to disarm Smith.

“Can I take that body strap and get it off of you?” the deputy said.

“You worried about it?” Smith said.

“Hey, I’m telling you; you touch me bro,” Smith added

In his agitated state, Smith reached for the handgun strapped to his side, drew it, then pointed it at the deputy.

“Put it down. Bay shots fired,” The deputy said.

Sheriff’s officials say Smith fired the first shots at the deputy.

The deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect at least once.

Smith fell to the ground but continued shooting.

“Drop the gun. I need code three now, I got shots fired,” The deputy said.

Once Smith was down, the deputy disarmed him and began providing CPR. But Smith died at the scene.
