Orem, Utah, September 11, 2025 — Across the country in Utah, supporters of Charlie Kirk gathered at a candlelight vigil mourning the loss of the 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder, who was assassinated on Wednesday at Utah Valley University. “Hearing that it was Charlie that was shot, my heart just immediately sank,” one mourner said. “When the news came out that he didn't make it, it was devastating.”

During a live broadcast, former House Judiciary Committee chief counsel Julian Epstein reflected on Kirk’s character and legacy. “Charlie really represented the best in American politics,” Epstein said. “He was a person of extraordinary character, respectful, brilliant, and deeply devoted to open debate. He went into the lion’s den of universities and used the Socratic method to challenge ideas respectfully, which is why so many admired him—even those of us who didn’t share his politics.”

Epstein, a lifelong Democrat, warned that the assassination signals “civilizational decline,” fueled by increasingly toxic rhetoric. He stressed that when leaders throw around terms like “Nazi” or “fascist,” it grants extremists a “permission slip” for violence. “Charlie never participated in that kind of garbage,” Epstein said. “He showed us how politics should be conducted—with logic, civility, and courage.”

The vigil comes amid growing concern over political polarization, radicalization online, and a rising tide of politically motivated violence. Kirk, remembered as a husband, father, and defender of faith, continues to inspire tributes nationwide.
