My name is Sir Thomas Gresham, and I was born in 1519 into a London family of merchants. From the beginning, trade and money were the world I lived in, and I quickly learned that wealth and influence were as important as titles or armies. My true education came in Antwerp, the great hub of European trade, where I mastered the arts of finance, exchange, and negotiation. Those lessons carried me into the service of kings and queens—Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth—all of whom trusted me to manage their debts and secure loans when England’s treasury ran thin. It was not easy, for England was poor compared to Spain, but skillful handling of credit gave us strength where brute gold did not. I also believed that merchants deserved a place equal to nobles in shaping England’s future. That vision led me to found the Royal Exchange, a great marketplace where traders could meet, bargain, and build England’s prosperity. I died in 1579, but I take pride in knowing that I helped lay the foundations for England’s rise, proving that ships and soldiers need merchants behind them if a nation is to grow strong.
