European Union: Urgent security call from Tomas Tobé and the future of the Schengen area

The voice of MEP Tomas Tobé echoed strongly in the European Parliament as he issued an urgent call that cannot and must not be ignored. In his intervention, he made it clear that the Schengen area—an achievement that for four decades has symbolized freedom, prosperity, and unity among the peoples of Europe—is now under siege. What was once hailed as one of the greatest accomplishments of the European Union is today facing growing threats that could undermine its very survival.

Tobé’s message was not a symbolic speech but a real warning: without security, there is no Schengen. At the heart of his remarks lies an uncomfortable truth that many within the European elite prefer to ignore: open borders without control lead to the weakening of the continent, both economically and socially. The idea of free movement can only survive if it is safeguarded by strong mechanisms of protection against those who exploit it.

Migration and border control

The first major challenge identified by Tobé is irregular migration and weak border security. In recent years, Europe has witnessed a massive influx of migration that, far from being controlled, has overwhelmed local communities and raised serious concerns about cultural identity and social cohesion.

The conservative MEP stated it is time to regain control over Europe’s external borders. This is not about closing Europe to the world but about ensuring that those who enter do so legally and with respect for the values that sustain European civilization. Full implementation of the migration pact and effective returns of those who have no right to stay are non-negotiable steps to restore order and protect national sovereignty.

Cross-border organized crime

The second challenge highlighted by Tobé is the surge of organized crime, which crosses borders with alarming ease. Criminal networks have learned to exploit the Schengen area to traffic drugs, weapons, and human beings, undermining the internal security of member states.

The message was crystal clear: Schengen was created for European citizens, not as a protective shield for international criminals. In this sense, Tobé called for a full transformation of Europol, turning it into a truly operational police agency with modern tools and resources to strike decisively against those who abuse European freedom.

Hybrid threats and hostile actors

A third and perhaps most complex front is the threat of so-called hybrid attacks. In an increasingly interconnected world, Europe’s enemies use disinformation, migration pressure, and economic leverage as weapons to destabilize internal stability.

Tobé warned that migration has already been weaponized by hostile actors with the aim of destabilizing borders and undermining political unity. Europe must therefore be prepared not only with defensive measures but with a comprehensive strategy combining digital, military, and border security.

Security as a priority

Tobé’s closing message was direct: security must be the European Union’s top priority. Only a secure Europe can be a free Europe. Only with strong borders can the dream of Schengen survive.

This vision reflects the conservative understanding that without order and control, prosperity is fragile and freedom becomes an empty concept. The European People’s Party (EPP) positions itself as the political force that acknowledges the urgency of the moment and the need to act together against both internal and external threats.

Europe’s future is at stake, and Tobé’s warning must be taken with the seriousness it deserves. If Schengen is to endure as a symbol of unity, it must be protected with firm policies, secure borders, and a clear commitment to defending European values.
