On the subject of salamanders, I just happened to be reading about Queen Elizabeth I yesterday, and the book said that she had complained about losing a "golden eft" off of her dress while traveling. I looked it up, and an eft is a newt. She was wearing a golden salamander, basically. That struck me as an unusual thing to make jewelry look like. Unless she was paying homage to fire elementals.
